Mercury’s Monterey was the division’s utility player during the 1950s and 60s, serving as entry-level, mid-range and flagship model in various model years. This gorgeous fourth-generation Mercury Monterey is another example of the two-tone paint craze that swept the American car industry during the 1950s.
This example was made in Ford’s Metuchen, New Jersey factory (VIN code T) on May 6, 1959. Dressed in white and red, this car’s paint and trim are in overall very good order, with some blemishes at the leading edge of the front end at close range. The car’s body is straight, its chrome bumpers fit tightly to the body and the engine bay is extremely tidy. A pair of sideview mirrors top the front fenders.
This Merc rolls on wide whitewall tires, size G78-15 at all four corners. Each tire is mounted to a steel wheel, topped by a factory wheel cover. The wheel covers are in excellent order while the tires are in very good order.
Under that forward-hinged hood is a 312 CID Y-block V-8 (VIN code P) with dual exhausts. Mated to the motor is a Merc-O-Matic three-speed automatic transmission (code PBM-G-7000-A) and a 3.10:1 rear end. Driver convenience features include power brakes. Inside is a white interior with black trim. The front and rear seats look great, as does the contrasting black carpet. A three-spoke steering wheel faces the driver. The white instrument panel is in excellent order while the inner door panels are in satisfactory shape. A column-mounted shift lever and a factory AM radio complete the interior.
For 1959, the Mercury Monterey (and Montclair) grew, adopting a 126-inch wheelbase. The Mercury-derived Edsel Corsair and Edsel Citation were discontinued; for the first time since 1940, Mercury used its own chassis and body.
The Monterey was offered in five bodystyles, including two and four-door pillared sedans, a two-door convertible, and two-door and four-door Cruiser hardtops. Taking its name from the discontinued Turnpike Cruiser, the Cruiser was given a large compound-curved rear window (styled as a fastback). To improve interior access and driver visibility, the forward-swept A-pillar was made nearly vertical.
Initially designed for potential production as both an Edsel and a Mercury, the Monterey inherited several design features from the division. The dashboard grouped all instruments and controls centrally around the steering wheel, with thermostat-style climate control (air conditioning was optional), power driver seat (with memory position), and a pre-set speed warning (a precursor to cruise control) offered as options. The “Big M” badging was replaced by lettered Mercury badging across the hood; a scripted “Mercury” badge was added to the interior.
Competition to this Monterey in 1959 included Buick’s LeSabre, DeSoto’s Fireflite, Dodge’s Coronet, Edsel’s Corsair, Oldsmobile’s Dynamic 88 and Pontiac’s Catalina.
If cars from Detroit’s “glam” period appeal to you, along with the longer, lower and wider approach, then you should check out this hard to find 1959 Mercury Monterey at MotoeXotica Classic Cars.
