When the All-Star program was first conceived, there was more to the thought process than merely honoring drag racing's best. The idea was to involve the magazine's readers as well—and oh, how they were involved! Behind the scenes, the staff would put together what we all hoped would be a comprehensive ballot encompassing every possible deserving competitor. The ballots usually appeared in two consecutive issues—June and July—with the awards ceremony itself slated for Indianapolis during the running of the NHRA U.S. Nationals and editorial coverage of the honorees appearing in the November or December issue.
